The festive season is upon us! As we head off to boil the sterling to hide in the Christmas pudding…and other vital tasks, we thought we’ve put together a doggie safety list for you.
6 Christmas Safety Tips for your Dog
1. The Tree
- Secure your tree to prevent it from being tipped over by your enthusiastic doggo.
- Keep the electrical cables out of reach. Cover them with a carpet or put your tree in a corner where cords are less accessible.
- Skip the tinsel! Some dogs ingest it, use ribbon instead, you don’t want any intestinal issues this Christmas.
- Choose shatterproof ornaments to avoid dusting up tiny shards of glass. It’s also a good idea to avoid ornaments made from food for obvious reasons.
2. Toxic to dogs
- We love Poinsettias, but they’re toxic to dogs – keep them up.
- When the holly berry decoration dries, the berries drop to the floor – these berries are toxic to both dogs and small children.
- Mistletoe – if your dog eats mistletoe, you should contact your veterinarian right away.
- Chocolate is toxic to dogs – so keep it stored.
3. Christmas food
- Avoid giving your dog rich and fatty foods, the ham, turkey stuffing, and gravy are for humans only. This way you won’t have to deal with any upset tummy clean up.
- Cooked bones can splinter and cause internal injuries, rather let your dog play with their rubber bones.
4. Celebration stress
- Create a quiet space for your dog to retreat to.
- Introduce your dog to your guests in a controlled setting.
5. Exercise and playtime
- Stick to your dog’s regular walking and eating schedule as much as you’re able.
- Mental stimulation is important, provide them with loads of attention like a game of frisbee weather allowing!
6. Have fun!
- Include your dog in the Christmas fun! Let them help decorate the tree, open presents, or even wear a festive bandana (if they don’t mind).
- We know you love to spoil them rotten! Bake them dog-safe treats or give them a Christmas stocking full of rubber bones.
Wishing you and your dog a relaxing and safe festive season!
