When we say we’re all in for them at Battersea, we mean it! We’ll be sharing tips and tricks from our team of experts to help you give back to your beloved canine companion, who gives so much to you.

Did you know 59% of pet owners care more about their pet than themselves*, but more than a third of owners feel as though they under-estimated how tricky it would be to have a pet*? We know how much worry can surround pet parenthood. The good news is, we have lots of advice available to help you give more to your top dog this summer.

Here’s our whistle-stop of summer do’s and don’ts:

DO

  • Limit sun exposure in peak hours
  • Use pet safe sunscreen on exposed areas such as their noses or ears.
  • Reduce physical activity on the hotter days
  • Use the seven second rule – If you can’t keep the back of your hand on the hot pavement for more than 7 seconds, wait until a cooler time in the day to walk your dog.

DON’T

  • Keep dogs in a hot car or confined space
  • Run or cycle with your dog on hotter days
  • Ignore drowsiness or drooling, which can be signs of heatstroke.

Dogs can’t regulate their body temperature as easily as us humans. They’re only able to sweat through their paws and nose. They release heat by panting instead, which is far less effective. This makes them much more susceptible to heatstroke than us, which is why it’s so important to limit or carefully monitor situations where they can overheat.

Remember

  • Larger dogs (over 50kg), double-coated, older or overweight dogs are significantly more susceptible to heatstroke than other dogs.
  • Breeds with short noses such as Pugs, Boston Terriers, and French Bulldogs are also at a higher risk of heatstroke.

Summer Treats
It can be a bit tough to think of ways to keep your dog entertained while beating the heat. Why not try these frozen treats that will light up their brains and cool their bodies. You will need:

  • 80g Sweet potato
  • 1 Small banana
  • 3 tablespoons of water
  • Their favourite treats

Peel, chop and boil the sweet potatoes for 10-15 minutes, or until soft. Then drain and leave to dry completely. Blend or mash the potatoes, adding water if necessary, and spoon into an ice cube tray or mould. Then push your treats into the centre and top with more sweet potato mixture. Once frozen, use as individual treats and let the fun begin!

Meet Gemini:

Gemini the Patterdale Terrier was brought to Battersea as a stray. She was a sweet girl, who unfortunately was suffering from a severe skin condition. With time and dedication, our care team improved her condition. Her energetic and loving personality was snapped up quickly, and she now has a loving home where she is flourishing.
